THE FESTIVAL
European Film Festival was first established in 2022, organised by the European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with Arabia Pictures. The festival aims at creating a
cross-cultural conversation, by utilising one of the most universal languages mankind has known; cinema.
In addition to offering a chance for European films to be screened and promoted to Arab audiences, European Film Festival also plays a key role in showcasing aspiring local talent and exposing it to the international market.
Moreover, it serves as a platform for European and Saudi filmmakers to connect, exchanging their experiences, hopes, challenges, and ambitions.
While creating a buzzing conversation between the aspiring filmmakers from both sides of the world, the festival also enhances the industry in both regions, allowing filmmakers to join forces, creating opportunities to
learn, create, and collaborate on projects.
THE ORGANIZER
The Delegation of the European Union to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain opened in Riyadh in 2004. The EU Delegation is also representing the EU vis-à-vis the Gulf Cooperation Council
(GCC), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). The EU Delegation works on many areas of cooperation between EU and Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain as well as the GCC, including
political dialogue, economic and trade issues, regional security, education as well as climate change and transition to green energy/economy.

Overview
Speakers: Mārtiņš Upītis (Animator, Latvia)
Description:
Virtual reality is opening new frontiers for cinematic storytelling, inviting audiences not just to watch but to step inside a film. This panel explores how VR is transforming the language of cinema — from directing and cinematography to editing and audience engagement. Filmmakers and VR creators discuss the artistic, technical, and emotional possibilities of immersive storytelling, and how VR challenges traditional notions of authorship, spectatorship, and narrative control.
- How does VR change the way filmmakers think about narrative and visual composition?
- In a medium without a fixed frame, how can directors guide the viewer’s attention?
- What are the key production and post-production challenges of shooting in VR?
- Is VR a natural evolution of cinema, or an entirely new art form?
- How might VR influence mainstream filmmaking aesthetics and distribution?
Animation Films
Surpassing geography and age
Vox Cinema, Century Corner Mall (Riyadh) 05 Nov 2025 | 5:30 PM
Overview
Speakers: Kajsa Næss (Norway – Animation Filmmaker)
Description:
This panel explores how animated films use a universal language of art and emotion to cross borders effortlessly. We will delve into the unique power of animation to transcend cultural and generational divides in a way other films cannot.
- How do you see the choice of the animation style could be a key element to reach your target audience?
- What techniques do filmmakers use to create content that is simultaneously delightful for children and intellectually or emotionally engaging for adults?
- What is the balance between creating a culturally authentic story and one that is accessible to a global audience? Can this affect your artistic choices?
- In the past few years we’ve been seeing very successful European animations that are globally recognized. Do you think there's more chances now for Non-US animations to reach more audiences?
- KSA has made recent attempts to enter animation fields. As a founder of an important studio, what’s the key advice you can give for the new players?
